Prizes - Awards

Applying for scholarships and grants takes time and involves other people.  You need to get yourself organized!

  • The first item of business is to research your eligibility for scholarships.  Make a list by deadline date and outline their requirements.  Excel works great for outlining your strategy and deadlines.
  • Next is your Request for Letter of Recommendation form.  This form gives your counselor, teachers, community leaders and others who are writing a letters of recommendation a better picture of who you are.  If you have a resume, include that.  Allow at least 1-2 weeks for someone to compose a letter of recommendation.  Last minute requests are rude.
  • Research the college or university you are preparing to apply to.  Many times they offer scholarships requiring another application.  The deadline date is sometimes earlier than the normal school application deadline or may require both applications at once.
  • Ask family, friends and community members if they know of scholarships or awards.  Many churches or local service groups put together scholarships to honor area students.
  • Research scholarships on www.fastweb.com, www.WashBoard.org  or other search engines.  Beware of offers to find you scholarships if they charge!
  • The Center has books on scholarships.  Take the time to look through these.
  • Contact NELA – Northwest Education Loan Association   www.nela.net  Their services are without cost to you. They can help you and your parents figure out the cost of college and help you with the Fafsa.  See the list of online workshops to find scholarships and complete your Fafsa forms.
  • Read all the eligibility and application requirements of a scholarship carefully.  Every scholarship is different.
  • Make a list and a timeline to complete the applications. Use that excel
