Summer Note

Summer is now upon us and I am sure that each of you has plans to enjoy the weather and the extra time. I know that it is important for all of us to enjoy some time off and certainly to return safely and refreshed.

The 2010-2011 school year has been an excellent year with many highlights, including an MUN trip to New York, a language immersion trip to Mastatal (CostaRica), multiple showcases of our student talent including community meetings, film festival, art showcase, poetry slam and some. In a couple of days we’ll see our graduates heading to the colleges of their choice and further advancement.

Our MAP scores returned with very encouraging results. We hope that our HSPE and End of Course exams prove to be as outstanding as the MAP scores.

We also want to thank you, Center families, for your support. We couldn’t teach your students to this degree without a good school/home partnership.

Every year we announce all staff changes that will be taking place when we resume school. We are happy to say that most of our main staff is planning to be on duty when school starts in the fall. However, there will be some adjustments in some positions. Our Administrative Assistant, Ms. Libby Simeon will be transitioning to Viewland Elementary school, where she will take a similar position.  Ms. Libby is known as someone consistently pleasant, and tackling all assignments with dedication and a smile. Ms. Libby’s  talents in coordinating school functions will be greatly missed. Our new Administrative Assistant, Ms. Tracey Lott will be taking the position.  Ms. Lott has served the School district for many years, coming to us directly from Coe Elementary and will be a wonderful addition to the Center School family.

Ms. Sanusi, our school counselor, is going to another school at the Seattle Public School district, and Ms. Harmon from Lowell Elementary is taking her place. We thank Ms. Sanusi for many years of her service at the Center. Ms. Sanusi’s special knowledge of the SPS rules and federal regulations, as well as her positive encouragement of students on a daily basis will be missed. Ms. Harmon is coming to us with elementary and high school backgrounds; she’s very familiar with high school counseling after her years of work at Rainier Beach.

We are also saying good-bye to Ms. Donna Taylor, Special Education Instructional Assistant, who is retiring. The Center School students will miss Ms. Taylor’s kindness, patience and optimistic outlook on life. And even though Ms. Taylor was an asset to our Autism Inclusion program, she was also extraordinarily helpful in other areas of ensuring smooth operations of The Center School.

I’m also sad to announce that Mr. Mak will be leaving the Center school to work at another school at our district.  Mr. Mak’s experience and kindness will be missed. Mr. Mak’s vacancy will be advertised soon. Ms. Carly Sautner, our speech pathologist is leaving our school as well.  Ms. Carly created some wonderful connections with our students, and will be difficult to replace.

Moreover, Dr. Glew is leaving our science position. Dr. Glew has worked hard to implement an Integrated Science curriculum at the Center.  She is a respected member of the greater Seattle Area of Scientific Studies.  Dr. Glew publishes her work in community print resources. We are very grateful to Dr. Glew for her dedication and work with The Center School students this year and thank her for all the work she has done here.

Furthermore, we’d like to extend our gratitude to our outgoing CSCA Board Members who have diligently served our community and The Center School over time. We also welcome the new members and thank everyone for the outstanding dedication to our students.
